What Are Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins are enlarged, twisted veins that typically appear blue or dark purple and are often visible just beneath the surface of the skin. While they can occur anywhere in the body, they most commonly develop in the legs and feet due to the increased pressure from standing and walking.

Did You Know?

Approximately 23% of American adults have varicose veins. When spider veins and reticular veins are included, this number rises to 80% of men and 85% of women.

How Varicose Veins Develop

Healthy veins contain one-way valves that help blood flow upward toward the heart against gravity. When these valves weaken or become damaged, blood can flow backward and pool in the veins—a condition called venous reflux or venous insufficiency.

This pooling causes the veins to stretch, enlarge, and become visible under the skin. Over time, the increased pressure can lead to symptoms and, in some cases, serious complications.

Signs and Symptoms

Varicose veins aren't just a cosmetic concern. Many patients experience uncomfortable symptoms that affect their daily quality of life:

Common Symptoms

  • Visible veins — Bulging, rope-like veins visible under the skin
  • Pain or achiness — Dull, throbbing discomfort in the legs
  • Heaviness or fatigue — Legs feel tired, especially after standing
  • Swelling — Ankle or lower leg swelling, worse at end of day
  • Skin changes — Discoloration, darkening, or hardening of skin
  • Itching or burning — Around affected veins
  • Restless legs — Uncomfortable urge to move legs, especially at night
  • Night cramps — Muscle cramping during sleep

When to Seek Immediate Care

Contact us immediately or seek emergency care if you experience sudden severe leg pain, significant swelling, skin ulcers, or signs of bleeding from a varicose vein.

Symptom Progression

Without treatment, varicose vein symptoms typically worsen over time. What starts as minor discomfort can progress to:

  1. Early Stage — Visible veins with mild achiness
  2. Moderate Stage — Persistent pain, swelling, skin changes
  3. Advanced Stage — Skin ulcers, bleeding, blood clots

Understanding your risk factors can help with prevention and early intervention:

Treatment Options

Modern varicose vein treatments are minimally invasive, performed in-office, and require little to no downtime. Dr. Echevarria will recommend the best approach based on your specific condition.

Minimally Invasive Treatments

Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA)

  • Uses heat energy to close damaged veins
  • 98% success rate
  • 30-45 minute procedure
  • Walk out the same day

Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA)

  • Laser energy seals problem veins
  • Excellent for larger veins
  • Minimal discomfort with local anesthesia

Sclerotherapy

  • Injection treatment for smaller veins
  • No anesthesia needed
  • Quick, 15-30 minute sessions
  • Often combined with other treatments

Ambulatory Phlebectomy

  • Removal of surface veins through tiny incisions
  • Immediate cosmetic improvement
  • No stitches required

Conservative Management

For mild cases or as a complement to treatment:

  • Compression stockings — Graduated compression to improve blood flow
  • Exercise — Walking and calf exercises strengthen vein function
